Calendula

Calendula

Calendula (Calendula officinalis), also known as marigold, is a traditional medicinal herb valued for skin health, tissue repair and soothing irritated tissues. Its bright orange and yellow flowers contain flavonoids, carotenoids and triterpenes that contribute antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity.

Calendula is commonly used in creams, balms and herbal preparations, but extracts can also be included in nutritional formulas where skin, digestive and immune support are priorities.

Skin and Tissue Support

Calendula has a long history of topical use for dry, irritated or damaged skin.

Its plant compounds help support the normal inflammatory response while protecting tissues from oxidative stress. Calendula is also associated with the processes involved in normal tissue renewal, which explains its traditional use in preparations for minor skin irritation and recovery.

The carotenoids within the flowers provide additional antioxidant support and contribute to calendula's characteristic golden colour.

Soothing and Inflammatory Support

Flavonoids and triterpenes found in calendula can influence inflammatory pathways throughout the body.

This gives the herb broader use in formulas designed to support comfortable skin, healthy tissues and normal immune responses, particularly where environmental exposure or irritation places additional stress on the body.

Digestive Support

Calendula has also traditionally been used to soothe the digestive tract.

Its gentle herbal activity is associated with supporting mucous membranes and maintaining healthy tissue within the gastrointestinal system. For this reason, calendula sometimes appears in herbal blends aimed at both digestive and skin health.

Calendula for Pets

Calendula can be included in supplements and topical preparations for dogs and cats, particularly to support healthy skin, seasonal sensitivities and tissue comfort.

In pet formulas it may be combined with nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids, quercetin, bromelain and antioxidants to provide broader support for skin and normal inflammatory balance.
