NZ Deer Liver

NZ Deer Liver

Deer liver is one of the most nutrient-dense animal foods available, providing concentrated amounts of vitamin A, B vitamins, iron, copper, selenium, choline and high-quality protein. In pet nutrition, small amounts can contribute valuable micronutrients that support vision, immune function, red blood cell production, skin and coat health, and normal energy metabolism.

Because liver contains nutrients at much higher concentrations than ordinary muscle meat, it is best used as part of a balanced formulation rather than simply fed in large quantities.

Why Is Liver So Nutrient-Dense?

The liver performs hundreds of metabolic functions in the body, including processing nutrients, storing certain vitamins and minerals, and helping regulate energy metabolism.

As a result, liver naturally contains a broad range of micronutrients that are difficult to obtain in comparable amounts from muscle meat alone.

Deer liver typically provides nutrients including:

  • Vitamin A
  • Vitamin B12 and other B vitamins
  • Iron
  • Copper
  • Selenium
  • Choline
  • Protein and essential amino acids

These nutrients perform different roles throughout the body, which is why organ meats have traditionally formed a small but important part of animal-based diets.

Vitamin A for Vision, Skin and Immunity

Liver is particularly well known for its naturally high vitamin A content.

Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin involved in normal vision, immune function, reproduction and the maintenance of healthy skin and epithelial tissues. These tissues line surfaces throughout the body, including the respiratory and digestive tracts, where they form an important part of the body's protective barriers.

Dogs can obtain vitamin A from animal-derived retinol as well as convert some carotenoids from plant foods. Cats, however, have a much more limited ability to convert beta-carotene into active vitamin A and therefore depend on preformed vitamin A from animal-derived foods.

This makes appropriately balanced animal sources particularly relevant in feline nutrition.

B Vitamins and Everyday Energy Metabolism

Deer liver also provides several B vitamins, particularly vitamin B12.

B vitamins do not provide energy directly, but they are involved in the metabolic pathways the body uses to release energy from protein, fat and carbohydrate.

Vitamin B12 is particularly important for normal red blood cell formation, nervous system function and DNA synthesis. It works alongside nutrients such as folate and iron in processes involved in healthy blood production.

This combination of nutrients makes liver useful as part of a broader nutritional approach to maintaining normal vitality rather than as an "energy booster" in itself.

Iron and Healthy Red Blood Cells

Like deer blood and other animal tissues, deer liver contains iron.

Iron is required to produce haemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying protein found in red blood cells. Healthy haemoglobin levels allow oxygen to be transported from the lungs to muscles, organs and other tissues throughout the body.

Iron also participates in enzymes involved in normal cellular energy metabolism.

Animal-derived foods provide iron in forms that are generally well utilised by the body, making organ meats a naturally concentrated source within a balanced diet.

However, more iron is not automatically better. Pets with suspected anaemia or unusual fatigue should be assessed by a veterinarian rather than simply given additional iron, as anaemia can have many different underlying causes.

Copper, Selenium and Antioxidant Defence

Liver is also naturally rich in trace minerals such as copper and selenium.

Copper contributes to normal iron metabolism, connective tissue formation, pigmentation and antioxidant enzyme activity. It also plays a role in maintaining healthy skin and coat colour.

Selenium forms part of several antioxidant enzymes that help protect cells from oxidative damage. It is also involved in thyroid hormone metabolism and normal immune function.

Both minerals are essential in small amounts, but they also illustrate why liver needs to be fed sensibly. Trace minerals can become excessive when highly concentrated foods are consumed in disproportionate quantities.

Choline for the Liver, Brain and Cell Membranes

Choline is another valuable nutrient found naturally in liver.

It is required to produce phosphatidylcholine, a major structural component of cell membranes, and acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter involved in communication between nerves and muscles.

Choline also contributes to normal fat metabolism within the liver and plays an important role in neurological development and function.

Dogs and cats require dietary choline, making nutrient-dense animal foods one useful way of contributing to overall intake.

Deer Liver for Skin and Coat Health

Healthy skin and coat depend on a combination of adequate protein, essential fatty acids, vitamins and trace minerals.

Deer liver contributes several nutrients relevant to this process, including vitamin A, B vitamins, copper, selenium and amino acids.

These nutrients help support normal skin-cell renewal, pigmentation and the production of structural proteins throughout the body.

For pets with dull coats or skin problems, however, nutrition is only one possible factor. Parasites, allergies, hormonal conditions and other health issues can produce similar changes, so persistent problems should be investigated rather than relying solely on supplementation.

Why Deer?

Venison is often used in pet nutrition as a highly digestible animal protein and may be useful in diets designed around less commonly used protein sources.

Deer liver provides the nutritional benefits of organ meat while complementing venison-based formulations.

For New Zealand pet products, locally sourced deer ingredients also offer advantages in traceability. Knowing where an animal-derived ingredient comes from and how it has been handled provides greater confidence around consistency, quality and processing.

Deer liver can also sit naturally alongside other New Zealand-sourced ingredients such as deer blood, deer velvet, hoki roe and Greenshell™ Mussel in formulations designed around whole-food nutrition.
