Prebiotic (Inulin)
Inulin is a naturally occurring soluble fibre found in plants such as chicory root, Jerusalem artichoke, garlic, onions and leeks. Unlike most carbohydrates, it passes through the upper digestive tract largely undigested before reaching the colon, where it becomes food for beneficial gut bacteria.
This makes inulin a prebiotic: rather than adding new bacteria to the gut, it helps nourish the microorganisms already living there.
How Does Inulin Support the Gut?
When beneficial bacteria ferment inulin, they produce short-chain fatty acids such as acetate, propionate and butyrate.
These compounds help support the cells lining the colon, contribute to a healthy intestinal environment and play a role in communication between the gut, immune system and metabolism.
Inulin is particularly associated with encouraging the growth of beneficial bacteria such as Bifidobacteria, helping maintain a more balanced gut microbiome.

As with many fermentable fibres, however, more is not necessarily better. Introducing large amounts too quickly can cause gas, bloating or digestive discomfort, so inulin is generally best used in moderate amounts.

The fermentation of prebiotic fibres changes conditions within the colon and may improve the availability of certain minerals, particularly calcium and magnesium.
