Saw Palmetto

Saw palmetto (Serenoa repens) is a small palm native to the southeastern United States. Extracts made from its dark berries have a long history of use in men’s health supplements, particularly formulas aimed at supporting the prostate and urinary function.

The berries contain a mixture of free fatty acids, phytosterols and other lipid-soluble plant compounds. These naturally occurring components are responsible for most of the interest in saw palmetto as a botanical ingredient.

Saw Palmetto and Prostate Health

The prostate naturally changes with age. In some men it can enlarge, a condition known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which may contribute to urinary symptoms such as increased frequency, difficulty starting urination or waking frequently during the night.

Saw palmetto has traditionally been used to support prostate and urinary health, partly because laboratory research suggests some of its fatty acids and phytosterols can influence pathways involved in androgen metabolism.

One area of interest is the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase, which converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT plays an important role in normal male physiology but is also involved in prostate growth and androgen-related hair changes.

Fatty Acids and Phytosterols

Most saw palmetto supplements use concentrated berry extracts rather than powdered whole fruit.

The lipid portion contains compounds such as lauric, oleic, myristic and palmitic acids, along with plant sterols including beta-sitosterol. These are the compounds most commonly investigated in relation to prostate tissue and hormone metabolism.

Saw palmetto is generally well tolerated, although mild digestive discomfort can occur. Because it may interact with hormone-related pathways and other medicines, people taking prescription medication or being treated for prostate conditions should discuss supplementation with their healthcare professional.
