Chondroitin Sulphate

Chondroitin Sulphate

Chondroitin sulphate is a naturally occurring glycosaminoglycan (GAG) found throughout cartilage and connective tissue. It forms part of the structural matrix that gives cartilage its resilience and helps joints withstand the pressure created by movement and weight-bearing.

Because of this role, chondroitin is commonly included in supplements for joint health, mobility and connective tissue support, particularly alongside glucosamine.

Cartilage, Cushioning and Hydration

Healthy cartilage needs to be both strong and flexible. Chondroitin contributes to this by helping cartilage attract and retain water within its structure.

This water-holding capacity gives cartilage some of its shock-absorbing properties, allowing joint surfaces to withstand compression while remaining smooth and resilient.

Chondroitin also forms part of larger molecules called proteoglycans, which combine with collagen to create the framework of cartilage.

Supporting Joint Mobility

As cartilage changes with age or repeated physical loading, maintaining its structure becomes increasingly important for comfortable movement.

Chondroitin sulphate provides nutritional support for the cartilage matrix and is widely used in formulas aimed at maintaining joint comfort, flexibility and mobility.

It is often combined with:

Each supports a different aspect of joint or connective tissue health.

Chondroitin and Glucosamine

Glucosamine and chondroitin are frequently paired because they contribute to related structures within cartilage.

Glucosamine provides building blocks used to produce glycosaminoglycans, while chondroitin is itself a major glycosaminoglycan within connective tissue.

Together, they are commonly used as part of a broader approach to joint health that includes regular movement, strength training, adequate protein and maintaining a healthy body weight.

Chondroitin for Pets

Chondroitin sulphate is also widely used in joint supplements for dogs, cats and other animals.

Its ability to support cartilage structure and moisture retention makes it particularly useful for ageing pets, active animals and those needing additional mobility support. It is commonly paired with glucosamine, Greenshell™ Mussel, MSM and hyaluronic acid in formulas designed to support comfortable everyday movement.

Chondroitin Sulphate in O2B Products

At O2B Healthy, chondroitin sulphate is included in O2B Joint Ultra+®, O2B Glucosamine+ and O2B Joint Manager, where it is combined with nutrients such as glucosamine, MSM, collagen and hyaluronic acid for broader joint and connective tissue support. It is also naturally provided by the New Zealand marine cartilage used in O2B K9+ Joints and O2B Feline+ Joints. Across these formulas, chondroitin supports cartilage structure, joint cushioning, moisture retention, mobility and comfortable everyday movement.
