Hyaluronic Acid
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring glycosaminoglycan found throughout the body, particularly in skin, joints, connective tissue and the eyes. Its defining feature is its ability to bind and retain large amounts of water, helping tissues stay hydrated, cushioned and resilient.
Because of this water-holding capacity, hyaluronic acid is widely used in supplements for joint mobility, skin hydration and healthy ageing.
Joint Lubrication and Mobility
Hyaluronic acid is an important component of synovial fluid, the slippery fluid that surrounds many of our joints.
It helps lubricate joint surfaces and contributes to shock absorption, allowing cartilage and other structures to move smoothly against one another. Hyaluronic acid is also present within cartilage itself, where it contributes to the hydrated matrix that gives the tissue some of its cushioning properties.
This makes it a natural companion to ingredients such as collagen, glucosamine and chondroitin in joint-support formulas.
Skin Hydration and Elasticity
Hyaluronic acid is abundant within the skin, where it helps maintain moisture and tissue volume.
Natural levels decline with age, contributing to reduced hydration and changes in skin elasticity. Supplemental hyaluronic acid is therefore commonly included in healthy-ageing and beauty formulas alongside collagen, vitamin C and other nutrients that support skin structure.
Its role is primarily centred on hydration and the extracellular matrix, helping create the environment in which skin cells and structural proteins function.
Eyes and Connective Tissue
The same water-binding properties are important in the eyes, where hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the vitreous humour and other ocular tissues.
More broadly, it forms part of the extracellular matrix surrounding cells throughout connective tissue, contributing to lubrication, hydration and normal tissue organisation.
These functions explain why hyaluronic acid appears in products spanning joint health, skincare and eye support.
Hyaluronic Acid for Pets
Hyaluronic acid is also used in joint supplements for dogs and other animals, particularly alongside glucosamine, chondroitin, collagen and Greenshell™ Mussel.
Its role in synovial fluid and cartilage makes it useful for supporting joint lubrication, comfortable movement and mobility, especially in active or ageing pets.
Hyaluronic Acid in O2B Products
At O2B Healthy, hyaluronic acid is included in O2B Joint Ultra+®, where it complements glucosamine, chondroitin and collagen to support joint lubrication, cushioning, cartilage and comfortable movement. It is also used in O2B Collagen+ alongside marine collagen, CoQ10, vitamin E, zinc and selenium, helping support skin hydration, elasticity, connective tissue health and healthy ageing.
