L-Tryptophan

L-tryptophan is an essential amino acid that the body cannot make on its own, so it must come from food. It plays several important roles in human and animal health, but is best known as a precursor to serotonin: a neurotransmitter involved in mood, emotional balance and relaxation.

The body also uses tryptophan to produce melatonin, which helps regulate the sleep-wake cycle, and niacin (vitamin B3), which contributes to normal energy metabolism.

How Does L-Tryptophan Work?

After being absorbed from the diet, some tryptophan is converted into 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) and then into serotonin.

Serotonin helps regulate mood, appetite, behaviour and sleep. Some serotonin can then be converted into melatonin, linking tryptophan intake with the body's natural sleep and circadian pathways.

Tryptophan also competes with other amino acids for transport into the brain, which means its effects depend on the wider nutritional environment rather than simply how much tryptophan is consumed.

Supporting Mood and Relaxation

Because of its role in serotonin production, L-tryptophan is often included in formulas designed to support a calm, balanced mood.
