Valerian
Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) is a traditional calming herb that has been used for centuries to support relaxation, restful sleep and a settled nervous system. The root contains naturally occurring compounds including valerenic acids and essential oils that contribute to its characteristic calming effects.
It is commonly found in formulas for stress, nervous tension and sleep, particularly where an overactive mind or physical restlessness makes it difficult to unwind.
Supporting Relaxation and the Nervous System
Valerian interacts with pathways involving GABA, one of the nervous system’s main calming neurotransmitters. GABA helps reduce excessive nerve activity, allowing the body to shift from a heightened state toward relaxation and rest.
This makes valerian particularly useful during periods of stress, agitation or nervous tension.
Unlike stronger sedatives, valerian is generally used to support the body’s natural ability to settle rather than simply causing drowsiness.
Valerian for Sleep
Valerian is perhaps best known as a traditional sleep herb.
It is commonly used when difficulty falling asleep is linked to tension, racing thoughts or an inability to wind down at the end of the day. Supporting a calmer nervous system before bed can make the transition into sleep easier and contribute to more restful nights.
For this reason, valerian is often combined with herbs such as passionflower, chamomile and skullcap, or nutrients including magnesium and L-theanine.
Stress, Tension and Physical Restlessness
Stress often produces physical symptoms as well as mental ones, including tight muscles, restlessness and difficulty relaxing.
Valerian has traditionally been valued for both its calming and antispasmodic properties, making it useful where nervous tension is accompanied by physical agitation or muscle tightness.
Its effects tend to suit evening or relaxation-focused formulas particularly well.
Valerian for Pets
Valerian is also used in calming supplements for dogs and cats, particularly during situations such as travel, thunderstorms, fireworks, separation or changes in routine.
Its traditional calming properties can help support a more settled nervous system and easier relaxation. In pet formulas, valerian is often paired with ingredients such as L-theanine, L-tryptophan, passionflower or magnesium to provide broader support for calm behaviour and emotional balance.
