Vitamin B9 (L-5-Methyltetrafolate)
Vitamin B9, commonly known as folate, is an essential B vitamin involved in DNA synthesis, cell division, red blood cell formation and normal methylation processes.
L-5-Methyltetrafolate (L-5-MTHF) is the biologically active form of folate used directly in one-carbon metabolism. Unlike folic acid, it does not need to go through the same series of conversion steps before entering the methylation cycle.
Folate and Methylation
Folate helps transfer one-carbon units used in many biochemical reactions throughout the body.
These reactions contribute to:
- DNA synthesis and repair
- Amino-acid metabolism
- Neurotransmitter production
- Red blood cell formation
- Normal homocysteine metabolism
L-5-MTHF can donate a methyl group during the conversion of homocysteine to methionine, linking folate closely with vitamin B12 and other nutrients involved in methylation.
Brain and Nervous System Function
Folate contributes to the production and metabolism of compounds used by the nervous system.
Its role in methylation connects it with pathways involved in neurotransmitter synthesis, cellular maintenance and normal brain function. This is why folate commonly appears alongside vitamin B12, B6 and other B vitamins in formulas for nervous system and cognitive support.
Cell Growth and Red Blood Cells
Cells that divide rapidly have a particularly high requirement for folate because it is needed to make DNA.
This includes cells involved in growth, tissue renewal and blood formation. Adequate folate is therefore important for normal red blood cell production and the maintenance of healthy tissues throughout life.
Why Use L-5-Methyltetrafolate?
Folate occurs naturally in foods such as leafy green vegetables, legumes, liver and avocado, while supplements may contain folic acid or active folate forms.
L-5-MTHF is already in the methylated form used within the folate cycle, making it a practical choice for formulas designed to provide directly usable folate.
Vitamin B9 for Pets
Folate is also essential for dogs and cats, supporting cell division, red blood cell formation, amino-acid metabolism and normal growth.
L-5-MTHF may be included in pet formulas alongside methylcobalamin (vitamin B12), DMG and other nutrients involved in methylation and cellular metabolism, particularly where support for brain health, healthy ageing or general metabolic function is wanted.
Vitamin B9 in O2B Products
At O2B Healthy, vitamin B9 is used across several human and pet formulas. O2B MitoCell+, O2B K9+ MitoCell and O2B Feline+ MitoCell contain L-5-methylfolate, the active form of folate used directly in methylation pathways, while O2B Multi Vitamin and O2B Hyper Zinc provide vitamin B9 as folic acid. Across these formulas, folate supports DNA synthesis, red blood cell formation, homocysteine metabolism, nervous system function and healthy cellular ageing.
