Flaxseed oil is pressed from the seeds of Linum usitatissimum, one of the world’s oldest cultivated plants.

Its nutritional value comes primarily from its essential fatty acids. These fats are described as essential because the body cannot produce them in sufficient amounts and must obtain them from food.

Alpha-linolenic acid

Alpha-linolenic acid, commonly shortened to ALA, is a plant-based omega-3 fatty acid. It contributes to normal cell-membrane structure and supports cardiovascular and general nutritional wellbeing.

The body can convert a portion of ALA into the longer-chain omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. This conversion is limited, however, so flaxseed oil should not be considered nutritionally identical to fish oil or algae-derived DHA and EPA.

Linoleic acid

Linoleic acid is an essential omega-6 fatty acid used throughout the body as part of normal cellular structure and signalling.

Omega-6 fats are sometimes discussed negatively, but they remain essential nutrients. What matters is the overall quality and balance of the diet rather than avoiding omega-6 fatty acids completely.

Cold-pressed quality

Cold pressing extracts the oil without exposing it to the high temperatures used in some conventional processing methods. This helps preserve its natural fatty-acid profile but also makes the oil more sensitive to heat, air and light.

For this reason, O2B Flaxseed Oil should:

  • Be used in cold or cooled foods
  • Never be used as a frying or cooking oil
  • Be refrigerated after opening
  • Be consumed within 12 weeks of opening

What is O2B Flaxseed Oil?

O2B Flaxseed Oil is a pure, cold-pressed oil made from New Zealand-grown flaxseeds.

It naturally provides the essential fatty acids alpha-linolenic acid and linoleic acid.

What is alpha-linolenic acid?

Alpha-linolenic acid, or ALA, is an essential plant-based omega-3 fatty acid.

The body cannot manufacture enough ALA itself, so it must be obtained from food.

Is flaxseed oil an omega-3 supplement?

Yes. Flaxseed oil naturally contains the plant-based omega-3 fatty acid ALA.

It does not naturally provide substantial amounts of EPA or DHA.

Is flaxseed oil the same as fish oil?

No.

Flaxseed oil provides ALA, while fish oil typically supplies EPA and DHA directly. The body can convert some ALA into EPA and DHA, but this conversion is limited.

People seeking a direct source of EPA and DHA may need fish oil or a suitable algae-derived product.

Does flaxseed oil contain omega-6?

Yes. It naturally contains linoleic acid, an essential omega-6 fatty acid.

Omega-6 fatty acids contribute to normal cell structure and function.

Are omega-6 fatty acids unhealthy?

Not inherently.

Linoleic acid is an essential nutrient. Overall dietary balance, food quality and the sources of fat matter more than simply labelling all omega-6 fats as harmful.

What does flaxseed oil support?

Its essential fatty-acid profile can contribute to:

  • Cardiovascular wellbeing
  • Healthy cell membranes
  • Skin moisture and integrity
  • Normal brain and nervous-system function
  • General nutritional wellbeing

Does flaxseed oil support cholesterol?

ALA and replacing some saturated fats with unsaturated fats may form part of a heart-conscious dietary pattern.

Flaxseed oil should not replace cholesterol medication, medical monitoring or broader dietary changes.

Does it support brain health?

Essential fatty acids contribute to normal cellular and nervous-system structure.

Flaxseed oil provides ALA, but it is not equivalent to taking DHA, which is a major structural omega-3 found in the brain.

Can flaxseed oil support healthy skin?

Essential fatty acids contribute to the normal structure of skin cells and may support skin moisture and comfort.

Persistent dryness, rashes or other skin changes should be professionally assessed.

Does flaxseed oil support hair and nails?

Healthy fats contribute to general skin and cellular nutrition, which may form part of a wider hair-and-nail routine.

Hair or nail changes can also relate to iron status, thyroid function, diet, stress or illness.

Is flaxseed oil good for joint health?

Essential fatty acids contribute to normal inflammatory-response pathways and general wellbeing.

How much should I take?

Take one to two tablespoons daily, or as directed by your healthcare professional.

How should I use it?

Add it to cold or cooled foods such as:

  • Smoothies
  • Yoghurt
  • Muesli
  • Salads
  • Dips
  • Cooled porridge
  • Vegetables after cooking

Can I drink it straight from the spoon?

Yes, although many people prefer mixing it into food.

Its mild nutty flavour may be more enjoyable when combined with yoghurt, smoothies or salad dressing.

Can I cook with flaxseed oil?

No.

Flaxseed oil is sensitive to heat and is not suitable for frying, baking or high-temperature cooking.

Can I pour it over cooked food?

Yes, once the food has been removed from the heat.

It can be added to cooked vegetables, soup or porridge after they have cooled slightly.

Why should flaxseed oil not be heated?

Its polyunsaturated fatty acids are vulnerable to oxidation when exposed to heat.

Using the oil cold helps protect its quality and flavour.

Does it need to be refrigerated?

Yes.

Once opened, keep the bottle in the refrigerator.

How soon should I use it after opening?

Consume the oil within 12 weeks of opening.

Write the opening date on the bottle if that helps you keep track.

Why does flaxseed oil spoil more quickly than some cooking oils?

Its high polyunsaturated-fat content makes it more sensitive to oxygen, heat and light.

Cold storage and keeping the cap tightly closed help slow oxidation.

How can I tell whether it has gone rancid?

Signs may include:

  • A strong bitter or unpleasant flavour
  • A paint-like, chemical or stale smell
  • A noticeable change from its usual mild nutty character

Do not continue using oil that smells or tastes rancid.

Can I take flaxseed oil every day?

Yes. It is intended for regular use.

Review its suitability with a healthcare professional if you take prescription medication or manage a medical condition.

Can I take it with fish oil?

Yes.

The products provide different omega-3 fatty acids. Flaxseed oil provides ALA, while fish oil generally provides EPA and DHA.

Can I take it with evening primrose oil?

The oils provide different fatty-acid profiles.

Evening primrose oil is valued primarily for GLA, while flaxseed oil provides ALA and linoleic acid. Combining oils may increase total fat intake and could be relevant to medication or digestive tolerance.

Is flaxseed oil the same as eating ground flaxseed?

No.

Flaxseed oil provides concentrated fat but contains very little or no fibre, lignans or protein.

Ground flaxseed provides fibre and other components from the whole seed, though it contains a less concentrated amount of oil per spoonful.

Does flaxseed oil contain fibre?

No meaningful amount.

People wanting flaxseed fibre should use whole or ground flaxseeds rather than the oil.

How should I store an unopened bottle?

Keep it away from heat and direct sunlight.

Once opened, refrigerate it and consume it within 12 weeks.

Suggested Dose:

Take 1-2 tablespoons daily or as directed by your healthcare professional.

Add to yogurt, muesli, smoothies, salads, or dress cooked vegetables.

Do not heat or cook with Flax Seed Oil.

Once opened store in the refrigerator and consume within 12 weeks.
