Branched Chain Amino Acids (BCAAs)

Branched Chain Amino Acids, or BCAAs, are three essential amino acids: leucine, isoleucine and valine. Because the body cannot manufacture them, they must be obtained through food or supplementation.

BCAAs are especially important in skeletal muscle, where they contribute to muscle protein metabolism, exercise recovery and the maintenance of lean tissue. They occur naturally in protein-rich foods such as meat, fish, eggs, dairy and legumes.

Muscle Protein and Recovery

Among the three BCAAs, leucine has a particularly important role in signalling muscle protein synthesis (the process used to repair and build muscle tissue).

This makes BCAAs relevant during periods of resistance training, demanding physical activity or recovery. However, building new muscle requires all of the essential amino acids, so BCAAs work best alongside an adequate intake of complete dietary protein.

Exercise and Energy

Unlike many amino acids that are primarily metabolised in the liver, BCAAs can be used directly within skeletal muscle.

During prolonged or demanding exercise, they can contribute to energy metabolism while also providing amino acids needed for muscle maintenance and recovery.

Isoleucine and valine have additional roles in glucose utilisation and energy metabolism, complementing leucine's stronger association with muscle protein synthesis.

Adequate protein, essential amino acids and resistance exercise help preserve strength and physical function. BCAAs can contribute to this nutritional foundation, particularly when overall protein intake is difficult to maintain.
