Spirulina
Spirulina is a nutrient-dense blue-green microorganism, more accurately classified as a type of cyanobacteria. It has been consumed as food for centuries and is now commonly used in powders, tablets and nutritional formulas because of its concentrated protein, minerals, pigments and antioxidant compounds.
Its deep blue-green colour comes largely from chlorophyll and phycocyanin, two naturally occurring pigments that contribute to spirulina’s distinctive nutritional profile.
A Concentrated Source of Protein and Micronutrients
Dried spirulina is naturally high in protein and provides a broad range of amino acids. It also contains iron, magnesium, potassium, carotenoids and several B vitamins.
Because the nutrients are concentrated into a relatively small amount of powder, spirulina can be a useful addition to diets where extra nutrient density is wanted.
Phycocyanin and Antioxidant Support
One of spirulina’s most interesting compounds is phycocyanin, the blue pigment responsible for much of its colour.
Phycocyanin has antioxidant properties and has been studied for its ability to help protect cells against oxidative stress. Spirulina also contains carotenoids and other plant-like compounds that contribute to the body's broader antioxidant defences.
Oxidative stress is a normal part of metabolism, but it can increase with ageing, intense exercise, poor sleep, pollution and other environmental pressures. Antioxidant-rich foods can help support the systems the body already uses to manage these reactive molecules.
Spirulina, Immunity and Inflammation
Research into spirulina has also explored its effects on immune activity and inflammatory signalling.
Some studies suggest spirulina may influence the activity of certain immune cells and help support a balanced inflammatory response. These effects appear to be linked partly to phycocyanin and other biologically active compounds within the whole food.
The evidence is still developing, so spirulina is best viewed as a nutrient-rich food with potential immune-supporting properties rather than a treatment for immune or inflammatory conditions.
Iron and Everyday Nutrition
Spirulina contains a useful amount of iron, although it is non-heme iron, the form found in plant foods and many supplements.
Iron is required for normal haemoglobin production, oxygen transport and energy metabolism. Its absorption can be influenced by the rest of the diet, with vitamin C helping improve the absorption of non-heme iron.
For people with diagnosed iron deficiency or anaemia, spirulina should not be relied upon as a replacement for appropriate testing and treatment.
